Sustainable Water Projects

Sustainable Water Projects

Crown invests in water efficiency projects that help to reduce our water consumption across our properties.

Crown Melbourne’s water-recycling system generates 1.4 million litres of recycled water each year, which is then then used for toilet flushing. The rainwater collection system can hold up to 300,000 litres of water and is estimated to save 6 million litres of drinking water every year.

Crown Perth has installed a water bore (using groundwater) to irrigate their gardens, effectively removing all irrigation from the town scheme water supply.

Water use across Crown Sydney is minimised through avoiding the cooling towers normally associated with commercial air conditioning of this scale. The centralised district system takes advantage of low energy use through higher efficiencies and utilises sea water heat rejection via connections to Sydney Harbour.

Shower heads, taps and toilets throughout the hotels have also been upgraded to be more resource efficient.

Waste Management Programs

Waste Management Programs

Crown receives monthly reports to show the waste generation for each stream. Crown’s Recycle90 program is central to the waste strategy and goal to divert 90% of waste from landfill. Recycling streams currently include:

  • cooking oil
  • e-waste
  • organic waste
  • metal and wood
  • polystyrene
  • soap
  • soft plastic.

Between 2015-2020 Crown has diverted approximately 68,000 tonnes of waste away from landfill.

Sustainable Energy Programs

Sustainable Energy Programs

Crown actively monitors and reports on energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions to measure our performance and identify areas for improvement. Our system provides live data for the electricity, gas and water we consume.

Between 2015 - 2020, Crown reduced its overall greenhouse gas emissions by nearly 35,000 tonnes (t CO2-e) which is the equivalent of eliminating 7,562 passenger vehicles from the road for one year.

Some of the projects implemented across our resorts include,

  • modifying lamps and sensors
  • improving IT systems
  • adopting energy efficient control strategies for air handling units
  • retro-commissioning the largest thermal plant in the southern
  • hemisphere.

Crown Melbourne’s solar power system is one of the largest in the CBD, with enough renewable energy to power up to 70 homes.

Additionally, solar panels have been discretely integrated into Crown Sydney’s design, located in areas that are sympathetic to the iconic architecture of the development. These help with reducing carbon emissions as well as energy consumption from the grid.

The Crown Towers Sydney development has achieved a 6-Star Green Star Design and As Built Rating under the Green Building Council of Australia’s certification scheme. A 6-Star Green Star rating represents the world’s best practice in sustainability.

Sustainable Supply Chain Policy

Sustainable Supply Chain Policy

Crown asks all potential suppliers and contractors to provide environmental credentials and performance of products and services.

Crown’s Sustainable Supply Chain Policy gives consideration to environmentally and socially preferable products, materials, and services that have lesser or reduced negative impact on climate change, water and air, native habitats, natural resources, health and safety, and human rights when compared with competing products, materials, and services dedicated to the same purpose.

Environmental Awareness Program

Environmental Awareness Program

CROWNEARTH was created to build environmental awareness within Crown and the broader community. CROWNEARTH volunteers focus on numerous energy, water and waste management initiatives, as well as community-focussed projects to improve the overall sustainability performance of the business. Employees also take part in major campaigns including the National Recycling Week and World Environment Day.

Throughout a calendar year, Crown and its employees support:

  • Collected millions of plastic bottle tops for Envision Hands; a not-for-profit community initiative that uses 3D printing to turn plastic waste into mechanical hands and arms for children around the world.
  • Hosted a fundraising event “Coffee for a Cause” to support Wildlife Victoria’s bushfire relief efforts.
  • Donated upcycled tote bags (made with laundered hotel bed linen) to SisterWorks; a not-for-profit social enterprise supporting women who are refugees, asylum seekers or migrants.
  • Participated in Clean-up Australia Day, with over 120 staff and contractors cleaning up the areas surrounding the Yarra River in Melbourne and Perth’s Swan River.
  • In partnership with Crown’s Staff Club, hosted a “Big Aussie Swap”; a clothing recycling event during National Recycling Week.

Crown Hotels Initiative

Crown Hotels Initiative

Crown Hotels are committed to sustainable practices while maintaining an
impeccable guest experience.

Over the last 12 months, Crown Hotels has:

  • Donated over two tonnes of soap bars to Soap Aid; a not for profit organisation who recycle and send much needed soap to communities facing major hygiene challenges.
  • Donated over three tonnes of soft linens and furniture to various charities and community organisations including The Salvation Army, The Lort Smith Animal Hospital and the Lost Dogs Home.
  • Crown Hotels has transitioned to more digital applications across the property and in-room to reduce paper consumption. More than half of Crown Hotels’ properties now use smart tablets in-room to reduce traditionally printed compendiums, menus and letters.
  • Crown Metropol Melbourne has recently undertaken a full replacement of the room locking hardware and room controllers which are responsible for the room’s occupancy status which in turn control the lighting and air-conditioning. Previously, guests would activate these in-room features via a manual card insert which could be left in place despite no guest occupancy. Through new motion sensor technology and magnetic reed switches installed in the door, these features are now only activated when the room is occupied, making the rooms far more energy efficient.
