Melbourne’s Top Mexican Cantinas
Forget Tex-Mex (remember hard-shelled tacos?) – Melbourne is in the middle of a Mexican renaissance with authentic street style eateries popping up throughout the city. Viva la revolución!
You know the food is going to be good when you see people queuing up Mamasita’s narrow staircase every night! This Melbourne icon was one of the first new wave Mexican restaurants to open back in 2009. We love the punchy Pibil-style pork hock tacos, and the mushroom & poblano tostadas are worth the queue alone.

You can’t get more authentic than La Tortilleria. The owners of this Kensington hot spot noticed a gap in the market for great quality corn tortillas, so they sourced a stone mill and tortilla oven, and the rest is history! If you’re looking for a true taste of Mexico, this is your place.

Hello José is only a stone’s throw away from Queen Vic Market which might explain why their tacos taste so fresh! The menu is simple – five different taco fillings served in freshly pressed corn tortillas. Best of all, they serve one of Melbourne’s largest range of tequilas.

Si Senor - Eat Drink Love Taco
The smell of spicy grilled meat hits you as you walk through the door of Si Senor and you know everything is going to be ok. Located in trendy Balaclava, locals can be seen sipping margaritas in the buzzy courtyard. We love their chicken quesadillas and Baja fish tacos – feeling hungry yet?

Mezcal, Tequila’s lesser known cousin is a complex spirit made from the Agave Plant. Bodega Underground owners Julian Downing and Geoff Machirus are the duo responsible for bringing this delightful smoky beverage to Melbourne. Don’t miss their exciting cocktail list and delicious tacos all served until 3 am. Word to the wise, don’t drive!
