Mocha Banana Smoothie Bowl

Put away the porridge, hang up the oven mitts and say hello to your high-speed blender - the summer holiday season is here!

With Christmas right around the corner, indulging is definitely on the cards (as it should be). However, Christmas doesn’t have to leave you feeling heavy, bloated and with added inches to your waistline; we’ve got you covered with a recipe that will leave your body feeling oh so healthy, and your taste buds totally satisfied.

Nothing screams summer louder than a smoothie bowl. Aside from making for an Insta- worthy food pic, smoothies are a great way of getting loads of nutrition into a meal – and they’re delicious to boot. Smoothie bowls are basically a thicker version of your regular smoothie, making it more substantial and nutrient-dense - perfect for breakfast or a snack and even enjoyed as dessert.

They’re also great for sunny days when you’re looking for an easy way to cool down after a long day at the beach. This one is made with coffee, raw cacao, chia seeds, hazelnuts and banana. Delectably thick and chocolate-y, it’ll give you a natural hit of happy hormones thanks to the cacao, as well as good fats from the nuts and complex carbohydrates from the banana. Yes, please!

Ingredients:

  • 30 ml shot of espresso coffee (decaf or dandelion tea will work too)
  • 1 tablespoon chia seeds
  • 2 tablespoons raw cacao powder
  • 1 frozen banana, sliced (make sure you slice before you freeze!)
  • 40 g (1/4 cup) hazelnuts (or any nuts of your choice), soaked and roasted
  • 250 ml (1 cup) almond milk or other milk of your choice
  • Toppings of your choice, to serve

Method:

  1. Pour the coffee or dandelion tea into a small bowl, add the chia seeds and let them sit for a few minutes. Transfer to a high-speed blender.
  2. Add the cacao powder, banana and hazelnuts. Pour in the milk and whiz until there are no lumps; the mixture can be quite thick. If your blender is struggling, add extra milk or water in small amounts to help it along.
  3. Pour the smoothie into a bowl.
  4. Garnish with your choice of toppings — fresh banana slices, a sprinkling of mixed nuts and seeds, shaved fresh coconut, micro herbs — and dig in!
