The best event season beauty looks

Can’t work out when it’s best to use blush over bronzer? Or how to get the perfect pout? The world of makeup can be overwhelming if you don’t know what you’re doing. You buy the products, watch the tutorials and still can’t contour to save yourself. We hear you!

To help, we’ve pulled in the experts. Here, Carly Louis from the Crown Spa gives us the low down on achieving some of the most popular looks this party season.

For when you just want to look ‘natural’

Even the natural look takes a little work if you want to get it right. But don’t work too hard, the key here is to keep it simple.

DON’T: Overdo it. “Less is more,” according to Louis. This look is all about fresh, hydrated skin, so “stick to less than five products and you can’t go wrong”.

DO: Start with a good base. “Hydrated skin will help brighten and illuminate and is the perfect canvas to start with,” she says. If you’re particularly time poor, Louis suggests a spray tan to save some serious minutes; “a light coat over the face blending into the body will last a few days.” Instant holiday skin!

HOW TO GET IT RIGHT: Hydration is key – inside and out. Drink plenty of water, use a good moisturiser and load up on skin-friendly foods like oily fish, avocado and nuts. When it comes to makeup, stick to minimal products. A good foundation, some translucent powder, a light blush and mascara should do the trick.

INSIDERS TIP: Louis says if you’re prone to oily skin, try using an oil free foundation and some translucent powder to help absorb excess oil and reduce shine.

For when you want to make an impact - the smokey eye

The eye of all eyes. The mecca of makeup looks. The smokey eye has stood the test of time, and for good reason – get it right and it can look stellar, but get it wrong and it could leave you looking like a raccoon at the races.

DON’T: Use the same brush to blend as you do to apply the eye shadow. “Keep one brush clean with no product for blending,” says Louis. “Use another to apply your shade and gradually build it up.”

DO: When it comes to eyeshadow, choose a colour that complements your eyes. For blue eyes, try “golden tones, champagnes and bronzes,”, for brown eyes try “copper, plums [and] warm tones,” and for green eyes choose “plums, purples [and] golden tones,” suggests Louis.

HOW TO GET IT RIGHT: Choose lips or eyes, not both. If a bold lip is your choice, “keep eye[s] simple, soft blended brown with a thin clean liner look”.

INSIDERS TIP: Less is more. The heavier the application, the less impact the look will have. Blend carefully and avoid piling up product as you may end up with a smudgy mess.

For when you want to stand out - the red lip

The sexiest of all lip colours. Red lips scream power, femininity and are almost guaranteed to give you the perfect pout – if you do it right.

DON’T: Just buy a shade of red because it looks good on someone else. “Try before you buy,” says Louis. For skin with cool undertones, go for raspberry reds, and for skin with warm undertones try a muted orange.

DO: Keep your lips hydrated. “Before applying any lipsticks, scrub your lip gently to remove dry skin using a lip primer,” suggests Louis.

HOW TO GET IT RIGHT: “Line your lip with a sharp pencil, apply your lipstick and using a tissue folded in half, blot your lip to remove excess”. If you’re worried about your lippy not lasting the day, try a “long-lasting colour stay lip stain,” and once it dries, “they will not move,” says Louis.

INSIDERS TIP: To avoid lip colour transferring onto your champagne glass, “lick the rim of your glass before drinking,” suggests Louis.
