The traveller's guide to beating's all in the nose

Holiday season, for a lot of us, means travelling in some capacity. Whether it’s across the city, an interstate or International flight, or even an uneasy ferry across the harbour – there is usually time spent on the road - which can lead to some killer jetlag or just feelings of fatigue.

Being tired isn’t ideal when you’ve travelled home to spend time with loved ones. No one wants to nap through Christmas lunch! So we’ve rounded up everything you need to know about beating jetlag this holiday season with tips from the experts at Subtle Energies, like the use of essential oils and aromatherapy, to get you back to feeling semi-normal in no time (and sending jetlag on a return flight to where it came from).

The star of the show

The nose, naso, nez, nariz… whichever language you say it in, the nose is important here. And it is through the nose that aromatherapy is said to be most effective, as using essential oils on the skin can sometimes cause side effects like allergic reactions, skin irritation and sun sensitivity.

Aromatherapy is thought to work by stimulating smell receptors in the nose, which then send messages through the nervous system to the limbic system — the part of the brain that controls emotions.

It’s areas like we don’t often think about that need the most love, according to Daniel Heywood from Subtle Energies.

“Pressurised atmosphere can deplete the skin as we travel, [so] It’s important to keep the skin protected, focusing on key areas that we sometimes forget, like the nose,” he says.

Takeaway: to beat jetlag, show your nose some love and invest in some good quality essential oils.

Sleep Easy

Sleeping on a flight comes with a whole host of issues, especially if you’re a self-conscious snorer! Getting some slumber on board can be easier said than done though, says Heywood.

Essential oils have been shown to assist in getting a better night’s sleep, and lavender oil seems to be a popular choice. It’s also been shown to help if you have osteoarthritis.

Takeaway: rub some oil on the tip of your nose so you can inhale the aromas as you sleep.

It's cool to be kind

To your anxiety, that is. For some of us, becoming an anxious flyer happens over time. Whether we’ve had a difficult experience during a previous flight, heard a few horror stories or maybe as we get older we just become more wary.

But whether you’re afraid of flying or not, Hayward says using an oil may help. “Using a body blend oil like the Bliss Blend is great for assisting anxiety, promoting relaxation and is a great tool to calm the senses and strengthen your immunity,” he says.

Takeaway: “Just apply it to key areas like the chest and arms… The aroma carries through to the nose.”
