While we know what we put in our body is just as important as what we put on it, studies show your skin in particular benefits from regular exercise, a balanced diet and low stress conditions. And you’re more likely to participate in those sorts of activities if you have a positive sense of wellbeing – aka being happy. Don’t skip the fat

Healthy fats have really come back into fashion the last few years, and with good reason.

Foods like salmon and avocado can help fight inflammation to keep your immune system functioning properly. Other foods that may help boost your energy are things like green vegetables, thanks to their antioxidant properties, perfect for a boost in iron and the production of red blood cells, helping fight fatigue. We knew there was a reason Popeye ate all that spinach...

Make cardio your friend

If you avoid running, you might want to reconsider – but we’re not suggesting miles on end pounding the pavement. Running for just 5-10 minutes a day can reduce your risk of disease and even help you live longer – three years longer than non-runners on average, to be precise. Your skin will thank you too - the increased blood flow from exercise means the skin cells receive more oxygen, nourishing them and providing nutrients.

And you don’t have to run, you can dance, cycle or take an aerobics class – even brisk walking will do the trick as long as you’re getting the heart rate up. Why not take the stairs instead of the lift, walk to the supermarket instead of driving, or take the dog to the park?

Try facial acupuncture

Having tiny needles inserted into pressure points stimulates nerves, which is said to balance the flow of energy in the body and may even boost the body’s natural painkillers. And while you may have heard of having acupuncture on your body, you can have it on your face, too.

The needles create small punctures in the skin, called ‘positive microtraumas’. As a result, the body goes into repair mode and delivers nutrients and oxygen to your skin cells, nourishing them from the inside out. The result may be a more even complexion and enhanced glow as well as increased collagen production.
